How do today's artists get in the heads of their followers/fans and stay there? Remember when the album cover was just as important as the music on the album. I still remember those urban art Parliament-Funkadelic covers and those Ohio Players album covers that left little to the imagination. Truth be told, I remember the covers more than some of the music contained on those albums. Not to be lost in this discussion are those album liners that provided addition photos, lyrics and insights into the artist. Yeah, we tried to replicate this when CD's were the rage. But, there was something missing. Not too many people put CD covers on their walls like we did with the album covers. And the liner notes were often to small to read without a magnifying glass.
So, how can this invasion of the mind be achieved in today's era when singles are streamed, and rarely do people purchase full albums.......yes some still call them albums.
Well, building a sound base of followers is the first priority. I know....I know. Everyone wants to make money off of their creations. But, honestly....streaming music will never make you much money unless you are a major superstar. Spotify pays a paltry 0.006 cents per stream. Translated means you'll need 1,666 streams to make $10. Some other streaming services pay less. Soooo.....selling your music at performances or on your own website will produce much better monetary results. But, this is true only if you have enough followers who appreciate your work enough to pay for it. So to get loyal followers be prepared to do your own marketing and promotion and to give away something for free.
Reverbnation.com is a great platform to network with other indie artists and share your music for free. You can build your followers, email them, share messages etc. Plus you can monetize your music through their promotion service, which will cost you.
Get your own domain through Godaddy.com or some other domain licensing service. This will help you build your brand by providing a platform to establish a customized email address and website. Besides, having your own domain is more impressive than using gmail.com or hotmail.com.
Once you done these things, connect the dots with your social media accounts, which you can use to direct all of your followers to your website. Facebook and Instagram now allow you to sponsor your posts to a larger audience for a small fee. You get to chose your target demographic, which is really cool.
I know this sounds like a lot of busy work that will take you away from what you really want to do.....make music. However, you have to keep your eyes on the ultimate prize of building your base of followers. Unless your can afford to hire someone to handle your promotion, like most indie artists, you'll need to do it yourself.
Does it sometimes seem as if your creative ideas are written in sand; subject to be erased or fade away in a fleeting moment? There were many times when an idea that was clear in my head somehow dissapeared by the time I was able to get in front of a keyboard. Yikes!
Then I saw on a YouTube video where a certain famous artist used his cell phone to record ideas on the fly. What a novel idea!
That said, the voice recorder on my smart phone has become my most frequently used app. For easy access, I made sure the voice recorder icon was on my home screen. Then, whenever I have idea, I pop open the recorder and lay it down.
The only negative is now I have so many ideas recorded that I need a system to prioritize them. I try to dedicate at least one day out of the week to pull an idea and formally develop it.
So, if you are having trouble remembering your ideas, give this a try.
It began with a simple Trumpet lesson in 4th grade, of which I felt compeled to do because two of my best friends were already playing. My first performance was at the Christmas assembly program playing Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer; which I received a standing "O". I'm sure it was because of the snazzy piano accompaniment by my teacher. But, from that day on music became a life's passion.
I followed my dream to Temple University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. My desire at that point was to teach children to understand and appreciate the joys music could bring into their lives. But something happened along the way.
My faith became my inspiration as I spent many years singing, playing and recording gospel music. I had tremendous opportunities to perform with some of the biggest names in the industry, the high point being accompanying Ms. Patti LaBelle on an East Coast tour as a back up singer and recording a hit gospel album with Philadelphia International Records. "The Journey will contain many chapters, each unique in lessons that will pave the way for your next triumph."
